What to look for in a talent manager

A good manager can change the direction of your career. A bad one can lock you into deals that do not fit and take a cut for doing very little. Before you sign anything, ask these questions.

1. What exactly is your fee?

You should get a clear percentage or fee, in writing, before you sign. If the answer is vague, walk away.

2. What do you actually do for me?

Pitching brands, negotiating rates, reviewing contracts, growth advice: get the list. Then ask how often you will hear from them.

3. How long is the contract, and how do I leave?

Know the term length and the exit terms before you are excited about the first deal.

4. Who else do you manage?

You want someone who has room for you. A huge roster can mean you are an afterthought.

5. Will you tell me no?

The right manager will turn down deals that hurt your audience's trust, and will tell you honestly when your content is not working. Flattery does not grow accounts.
